Murrieta Vasectomy

What is a Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a relatively simple out-patient surgery to interrupt the flow of sperm from the testicles to the outside. This procedure is done by closing the vas deferens, which are small tubes that transport sperm from the testicles to the urinary system, allowing the later release of the sperm to the outside.
What a Vasectomy Is Not:
  • It isn't as invasive as the corresponding procedure for women - tubal ligation.
  • A vasectomy is usually painless, especially when the "No-Needle" anesthesia technique is used in experienced hands.
  • It isn't a solution for sexual or marital problems.
  • It shouldn't be considered uniformly reversible. You may have heard of someone who had the procedure reversed? This works many times, but you can't count on it. A vasectomy should be considered permanent. If you want a reversible birth control method, please see the "Alternatives" section for additional information.
What Vasectomy Doesn't Do:
  • It doesn't affect male hormone levels, since testosterone is released into the bloodstream, not through essentially vas.
  • It shouldn't affect sexual function, sex drive or sensation. The semen appears essentially the same, though the sperm cells are missing.
  • It doesn't protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Vasectomy also doesn't make you sterile immediately, because sperm stored in the lower part of the vas deferens may be viable for many weeks after vasectomy. That's why sperm counts are not taken until at least 8 weeks after the procedures.
